Lakhimpur Kheri, October 25, 2024। Through the earnest efforts of DM Durga Shakti Nagpal, the hardworking women artisans of the Tharu tribe in Kheri are set to make this Diwali special for residents across the state with their unique handicraft products.
This initiative not only introduces people to the Tharu community’s rich cultural heritage but also promises to brighten Diwali for the Tharu tribe, lighting up their lives with joy and hope.
The effort showcases a meaningful step toward empowering local artisans while promoting the vision of Vocal for Local and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The initiative allows residents to gift unique handicraft products along with traditional sweets and dry fruits, adding a cultural touch to Diwali celebrations. Renowned worldwide for their historical and cultural legacy, the women of the Tharu tribe are celebrated for their distinctive attire and craft skills.
In a special gesture, DM Nagpal purchased “Shubh Labh” products from the Parvati Self-Help Group, operated by Tharu women, and personally presented them with a cheque of Rs 27,000 from her own account. This endeavor was also graced by the presence of CDO Abhishek Kumar, ADM Sanjay Kumar Singh, and Project Officer of the Integrated Tribal Development Project, Chandan Chowki, UK Singh.
The Tharu tribal community, residing near Dudhwa National Park on the Indo-Nepal border in Lakhimpur Kheri, has earned the ‘One District, One Product (ODOP)’ status for their traditional handicrafts.
With support from the Yogi government and district administration, economic, educational, and social development initiatives are being ensured for the tribe.
